I just want to say, that if you meet someone new and they seem snobby or stand offish, please consider the thought that they may just be shy. More than that, they may have social anxiety and if you meet them in a loud crowded place they are probably not only freaking out about meeting a new person, but also about all the people surrounding them.
It’s a hard thing for shy people to meet someone new. I’m shy, and in most situations I don’t talk much around new people. Sometimes I stop myself, because I’m not yet sure what their sense of humor is like, or if they’ll think I’m stupid. More often, though, my voice goes on lockdown and I couldn’t speak if I wanted to.
I’ve had people tell me that they thought I didn’t like them when I first met them, and I feel bad about that. I honestly can’t help but be withdrawn and quiet in certain situations. It makes me sad when I hear it has given someone that impression.
I work on being better about my social anxiety all the time. But, maybe, people could also possibly give those negative impressions a second, or even third, chance. Maybe that person really is stand-offish, or snotty. Most likely, they’re just really shy, and not at their best when around strangers. Ask mutual friends. “It seemed like so-and-so didn’t like me, what do you think?” 9 times out of 10 you’ll hear “No! She/He is just really shy. Give it time.”
So this is just my little PSA for shy folks. Give us a second or third go around. I promise, it’ll be worth it.
